Department of Pharmacognosy has facilities apt for analysis on plants. Plant
samples that are worked on are kept in the herbarium of our department. The equipment
necessary for extraction of plant samples and isolation of metabolites from these
extracts are found in the department though with limitations. There are water baths
and electrical heaters for extraction, recycling coolers, evaporators, lyophilizators,
chromatography equipment (thin layer chromatography set, columns and fraction collectors
of various sizes for classical column chromatography, preparative liquid chromatography
equipment, VLC, MPLC and analytical HPLC). Some of the devices necessary for structural
analysis of natural compounds are found in our department (UV, FT-IR, LC-MS, polarimeter)
and in other units of our university (NMR, 400 MHz). The absent equipment that are
required in some studies may be obtained by interdisciplinary studies (please see
the publication lists of related researchers). The main research topics include
glycosides (monoterpene glycosides, iridoids, triterpenic and steroidal saponosides,
phenylethanoides, lignans, antranoides and flavonoides) and diterpenes. The department
also has a quite rich collection of natural compounds.
